The Benefits And Drawbacks Of Ro/Ro Yacht Shipping

There are a number of methods which can be employed to move boats globally, and one of these is RO/RO boat relocation. This method provides both benefits and negative aspects, and is not perfect for every boat as a consequence of certain size limitations, but it is probably one of the most common ways employed for worldwide boat transportation.

A trailer, or a tailor-made cradle attached to a boat, is used to keep the boat vertically. The trailer is basically towed onto the vessel, secured for transit in the ship’s belly, and then towed off again when the destination is arrived at the country. No additional equipment is required, and there is no forklift or crane used to move the boat on and off the ocean carrier. The crane can be used when loading or unloading the boat from the truck that’s taking the boat to the ocean docks.

Some benefits of Rollon Rolloff boat relocation include:

  • Towing means little or no handling, and this greatly lowers the chance of damage;
  • The boat is stored inside the ship and covered from the elements and inclement weather;
  • No need to worry about the container size because no container is used;
  • Secure transportation with no boat movement or shifting in the process.

RO/RO boat transport also has some drawbacks as well though. These comprise of:

  • Size limits, so this technique can’t be employed with large yachts or other bigger special vessels;
  • A higher cost, as the price for shipping is based on total volume and this amount includes the trailer volume as well as that of the boat;
  • Detachable gear and private articles have to be taken away before shipment, unlike container shipping;
  • A bigger risk of theft from your yacht, particularly electronic equipment and small things which can be easily taken away by the longshoremen.
