Preparing For A Boating Trip

Whenever a person goes out on a walk, hike, camp, or picnic, there are always supplies that need to be brought along.  The same rules fly with boating, whether you are only going to be on the water for a day, or if you are staying there for a few days.  There are a few items that you should remember to bring with you, and if you have them on the boat, they may save your life in a dangerous situation.  If you are planning for a day trip, most items on the list still apply because they will provide the most comfort for your day on the water.

The most critical thing to human survival is H2O.  Our Bodies are 55% to 78% H2O, and you can survive anywhere from one to three weeks on water alone.  So obviously, the most crucial thing to bring on any boat trip is H2O, and a lot of it.  The sea salt in the ocean spray can suck moisture from your skin, and the sun’s rays coming down upon you also dehydrate you.  By being well hydrated, one can prevent dehydration, heat exhaustion, and in extreme cases, death.  Also bring enough snacks for the number of days you think you will be out, and add one day.  This will provide you an extra snack if all goes as planned, or a chance to ration food in emergencies.

The sun’s rays come down on our planet non-stop.  When we get our 12-14 hours of summer sun, it is not hard to get sun burnt if you do not have the right protection.  Out on the water, the sun’s rays are stronger, and may hit you at different angles causing a worse sun burn.  Always remember to bring a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses to reduce your likelihood of getting sun burnt, and guard your eyes from harmful rays.  Also included in protection from nature is a light to medium waterproof jacket.  You may get caught in a storm and there’s not much worse than being stuck in bad weather on a boat while you’re not ready for it.

The final few things are the ones that can truly save your life if the situation calls for it.  Life jackets are tested life savers in worst case scenarios, because they can keep you buoyant if your vessel capsizes.  A compass can tell you which direction you are headed.  Used with a map and good quality binoculars like Nikon 12×42 binoculars, you are basically all set for navigation.  Marine air-horns and small mirrors can be used to signal to other boats or helicopter and planes, and a pocket knife can be extremely versatile.

The article is short, but each of these things is very important in a way.  Sun defense can slow dehydration along with add comfort.  Water and food will supply you with the vital nourishment that you need to live.  Last but not least, signal tools and safety precautions are always a great idea.  Some of these things may even protect your life if you find yourself in an emergency, so when boating, always go prepared.
