Decorative Boat Flags – Do People Do That?
Posted by Boating Laws - 05/09/10 at 01:09 pmWhen I think about decorative flags, my mind immediately goes to the decorative flags that people fly on their homes. I guess that is true since I don’t go out to marinas that often and I’m constantly traveling around my neighborhood where I see these yard flags all over the place, so that’s my frame of reference.
But the other day I was searching around the internet and they talked about flying outdoor flags on boats and that how many people love flying these yard flags on their boats. So I began to think about the last time I was by a marina and yes, I do remember a few decorative flags. Most people have seen the ole skull and cross bones flag being flown, which is called the Jolly Roger. But yes, people are starting to bring what they love about yard flags to their boats too.
While I am not sure exactly, I don’t think you need any special material for these yard flags on the boat. I guess more of a plastic type of material would last longer, but who knows. Just go to the same store you buy yard flags now and put them on your boat.
I’ve normally seen these banner flags being flown on sailboats the most, followed by larger boats like yachts. It’s rare to see them on little speed boats; you know the basic ski boat. I guess there’s two reasons for this. One, sailboats have the obvious place to put your outdoor flags, that being the mast. If you notice who the people are that fly banner flags, they are people who are in a more laid back environment. So sailboat and yacht people are just kind of floating around or parked somewhere, where a nice yard flag flying just makes sense.
So the next time you’re at the marina, look around and I’m sure you’ll see a lot of banner flags flying around the boats.
