The backfire flame arrestor is safety equipment that is installed on each carburetor for boat safety. Its main purpose is to keep away the boat from exploding especially when the engines backfire. Often, it is used on boats and covered engines that allow the build up of fumes inside and will catch fire even with a smallest fire in the engine. Under the law, all power vessels are required to have this except those run by gasoline. Before the boat can replace or install the backfire flame arrestor, the owner must meet the requirements of the law too.

It is important that the backfire flame arrestor is clean, undamaged, and serviceable. A simple break such as a hole in the body or improperly attached parts will prevent it from working properly. In cleaning the black flame arrestor, it must be removed from the vehicle and washed with soap and water. Before reinstalling, it must be dried completely. The flame arrestor works by cooling the flame or dampening the burning wave to prevent the flame from scattering and transferring. The features of a good backfire flame arrestor are mechanical strength meaning it does not tear easily, excellent joint strength where in the parts can be attached to other parts precisely, uniform porosity so that it will provide a non-shedding and mechanically good in quenching the fire.
Therefore, not only to follow the rules but also to provide safety to fellow passengers as well as to other vehicles’ too, it is important to have the equipment installed.
