Driving A Pontoon Boat Without Getting Burned – Literally
22nd July 2009 by Boating Laws No CommentsIf you possess a Pontoon boat or have thought about having one, you may have been attracted by the unmatched blend of affordability and ease of use compared to bigger, costlier freshwater craft. There is no better freshwater craft that seems more appropriate for fishing, sightseeing, or simply resting with a chilled beverage while traversing a lake. The experience, however, will not be fun for long, as you burn under the rays of the sun or get drowned by rain. If you don’t want your excursion ruined by weather conditions, you should buy an overhead canopy, most commonly known as a Bimini top.
Bimini tops are named after the island of their origin, {whose fishermen are responsible for its creation to protect them from weather conditions}. Bimini tops today serve the same basic function, though they are made from sturdier materials. The two indispensable factors that you must consider when buying a Bimini top are: (a) the measurements of the top, (b) the material of the fabric.
First, you must select a bimini top that fits your pontoon boat properly. This demands that you acquire a few measurements of your boat. For width, simply measure the distance across your boat from gunnel to gunnel, with some extra space for the mounting frame. The top can be any length you choose that you feel will give you enough cover from the weather. Length is more subjective, but ideally you would want a top long enough to shield a certain average party of occupants at any given period, with additional fabric hanging over if you want extra covering. Lastly, to measure height, place a pole across the boat where the mounting brackets will be positioned, then measure upwards to the height that you find suitable. If you don’t expect to do plenty of standing under the Bimini top, you can measure for a height where you can bend over to enter the boat without excessive inconvenience.. A higher Bimini top may increase wind resistance, but then, are you really attempting to beat any speed records in a pontoon boat?
Choosing the right Bimini top fabric involves striking the proper balance of cost versus longevity. Cotton-based tops are the cheapest, made of material similar to canvas, and are an acceptable choice if you’re on a budget and won’t take your pontoon boat out much. Cotton tops are weak against ultraviolet (UV) rays, prone to leaking, and may rot over time unless stored properly. Vinyl tops are a very popular choice since they are easy to clean, solid enough to provide protection from the rain, and are normally resistant to UV rays and deterioration from mildew. Acrylic and treated polyester tops are the most expensive, but also very tough, remarkably resistant to scratching and fading, and strong enough for regular outdoor activity. For the pontoon enthusiast, these tops are capable of withstanding repeated abuse from the elements. Acrylic and polyester would be a wise purchase for the professional pontoon boater. Companies like Sunbrella provide exceptional original fabrics that supply the best protection for the right price.
Choose wisely. A good Bimini top usually spells the difference between a refreshing day out in the water, and being tortured by inclement conditions before you are forced to beat a hasty retreat to shore.
